Eating Out: Durham Miscellany

Recently voted the tastiest town in the South in Southern Living, partly because there's cool shit here, partly because people here are always looking for some new way to be chic. I still love visiting the tree-lined neighborhood streets, though.

Dos Perros: mistas (roasted mushrooms, poblanos, and squash) burrito-style. (The included Oaxacan cream comes on the side.)

Vine - Thai & Sushi: Green Thai Curry with tofu and vegetables. Comes with a bowl of rice and a choice of side. (Don't get the miso soup because it has fish paste in it, FYI.) The tofu was ill-treated a squishy, BUT the hunks of potato were glorious. I have no idea what they put on them (probably salt) but they were frickin' delicious.

Also from Vine: Basil Tofu--which had a better prepared of tofu in a yummy basil stir fry. It comes with rice and a choice of salad or (fish containing) soup as well.

Thai Cafe: Sauce was good and I really love basil leaves in my stir-fries. The tofu was well-treated and more like the tofu I've had in Asia. The dish would have been better some crushed peanuts sprinkled on top, but it was still good.

Sitar: one of the many buffet plates I have gotten from there during my visits. Roti (flat bread), pakora (greens battered & deep fried), chana masala (chickpeas in curry sauce), saag paneer (spinach, mushrooms and traditionally Indian cheese), and aloo gobi (potatoes & cauliflower).

Bahn's Vietnamese Cuisine on Ninth Street: Kept hearing about the Wednesday/Saturday specials, particularly the hit or miss fried tofu in black bean sauce. The sauce didn't wow me and the tofu should be marinated to please non-tofu lovers, but I'd definitely eat this again. Roasted broccoli, the stickiest sticky rice I've ever had, and crispy onions accompanied.

Lily's Pizza: Fuzzi Duck Salad is composed of "vegan Chicken Strips baked and tossed in our homemade Lemon Vinaigrette over organic romaine hearts with jalapeno, cucumber, monterey jack & organic red onions! Served with our homemade Croutons."

The Federal: Bean burger sliders (the online menu says lentil/leek, but the restaurant menu says black beans) served with guac, salsa, lettuce, and curry aioli. Comes with a side; I had salad.

Blue Corn Cafe's Black Bean And Sweet Potato Stew: "Sweet potatoes, corn, black beans, and cilantro in a tomato broth. Topped with avocado slices."

The Palace International: Maharagwe Ya Nazi: Red kidney beans cooked in coconut milk with ginger and cayenne pepper.  Served with two sides; I got chapati and rice.

Pomegranate Kitchen--i.e. delectable Persian glory between Durham and Chapel Hill: Loobia Polo (green beans rice) and Mirza Ghassemi (roasted eggplant stew) combo plate.

It was positively delicious!
